Le Secret de la Franc-Maçonnerie | Mons. Amand-Joseph Fava

Guillerand Augustin - The prayer of the presence of God

PART I True Prayer

1

Movement Towards

Him Who Is

St. JOHN DAMASCENE’s definition of prayer is well known. “Prayer,” he says, “is asking God for what 1s fitting.” We must probe this thought thoroughly, draw from the words their substance, separate its parts and, having done so, restore them to the deep life of this substance which sustains them and gives them life.

This definition of prayer falls, then, into two parts which are, as it were, its matter and form.

Prayer is an asking, but an asking of God, and consequently bears the impress of him to whom it

is addressed.

We can ask God only for what he wants us to ask of him, and he can will only what is conformable to his will. Now since God is one of the ‘terms’ of prayer—that is, we pray to him—and since he is infinite Order, prayer is a request essennally “ordered,” in other words consonant with the order of God himself. What is that order? It is what he is—Being himself: that Being from whom, by whom, and for whom all things are." He is our Beginning and our End.* He is the light of our mind and the strength of our will. He is Truth, Goodness and Beauty unalloyed, the source of all joy and the ocean of all life.

What is “fitting,” therefore—what we must ask God for—is himself; to be united with him, to be transformed in him: to possess him and to be possessed by him. We should ask to enter, by grace,

into such intimate relations with him as unite us to him; to become his sons by a communication as

complete as possible of his Spirit of Love; to share in that joy and in that life which is his joy and his

life: in short, to share in Joy itself and Life itself.

The Scriptures are full of this prayer, which is constantly bubbling up like water-springs on a

The miscreant always acted against his better knowledge. His life gives us many examples of this fact. I will relate one for you. When he broke a blood vessel on one occasion, he begged his assistants to hurry for the priest. He confessed, signed with his hand a profession of faith, asked pardon of God and the Church for his offences, and ordered that his retractation should be printed in the public newspapers; but, recovering, he commenced his war upon God anew, and died refusing all spiritual aid, and crying out in the fury of despair and agony, "I am abandoned by God and man." Dr. Fruchen, who witnessed the awful spectacle of his death, said to his friends, "Would that all who have been seduced by the writings of Voltaire had been witnesses of his death, it would be impossible to hold out, in the face of such an awful spectacle." But that spectacle was forgotten, and consequently,

before ten years passed, the world saw the effects of his works.

Speaking of the French Revolution, Condorcet, in his "Life of Voltaire," says of him, "He did not see all that which he accomplished, but he did all that which we see. Enlightened observations prove to those who know how to reflect that the first author of that Great Revolution was without doubt Voltaire."

I have thus far spoken of Voltaire and his teachings in order to introduce with greater clearness the important subject to which I ask the favour of your attention this evening. It never was the intention of this man to let his teachings die, or beat the air, so to speak, with mere words. He determined that his

fatal gospel should be perpetuated, and should bring forth as speedy as possible its fruits of death. Even in his life-time, we have evidence that he constantly conspired with his associates for this end, and that with them he concocted in secret both the means by which his doctrines should reach all classes in

Europe, and the methods by which civil order and Christianity might be best destroyed. St. Beauve writes of him and of his, in the Journal des Debats, 8 November, 1852:-"All the correspondence of Voltaire and D'Alembert is ugly. It smells of the sect, of the conspiracy of the Brotherhood, of the secret

society. From whatever point it is viewed it does no honour to men who make a principle of lying, and who consider contempt of their kind the first condition necessary to enlighten them.

'Enlighten and despise the human race.' A sure watchword this, and it is theirs. March on always sneering, my brethren, in the way of truth.' That is their perpetual refrain." But not only did he and his, thus conspire in a manner which might seem to arise naturally from identical sentiments and aims, but what was of infinitely greater consequence, the demon, just as their sad gospel was ripe for propagation, called into existence the most efficacious means possible for its extension amongst men, and for the wished-for destruction of the Church, of Christian civilization, and of every form of existing Christianity. This was the spread amongst those already demoralized by Voltaireanism, of Freemasonry and its cognate systems of secret Atheistic organization. This is the point upon which I am most anxious to fix your attention this evening.

CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI

Orfeus

Favola in musica v prologu a 5 dějstvích na text Alessandra Striggia.

„Favola in musica“ znamená doslova „pohádka ve hudbě“.

August Wenzinger v roce (1955), Nicolas Harnoncourt (1975) a další.

August Wenzinger, *1905 v Basileji, violoncellista a viola da gamba, od roku 1934 učitel a ředitel koncertního souboru Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, 1954-58 ředitel Capella Coloniensis WDR Kolín nad Rýnem.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt, narozen 1929 v Berlíně, rakouský violoncellista a dirigent, zakladatel souboru Concentus musicus (1953), který hraje starou hudbu na částečně rekonstruované původní nástroje. Jeho interpretace Monteverdiho v Curyšské opeře, společně s režisérem a scénografem Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, vyvolal Monteverdiho renesanci v sedmdesátých letech.

Postavy: Génius hudby (soprán) - Orfeus (deset.) - Eurydika, nymfa (soprán) - 2 poslové (alt a soprán) - Naděje (mezzosoprán) - Charon (bas) - Proserpina (soprán) - Pluto (bas) - Apollo (deset.) - Nymfa (soprán) - Čtyři pastýři (alt, deset, bas) - Tři duchové podsvětí (deset a bas). Pastýři a pastýřky.

Duchové podsvětí. Devět múz.

Místo a čas: Thrákie a podsvětí v mýtickém pravěku. Zápletka: Prolog. Alegorie hudby velebí sílu zvuků, kterými thrácký zpěvák a hráč na lyru Orfeus krotil divokou zvěř a otevíral dveře do podsvětí.

1. až 5. dějství Pastýři a nymfy slaví svatbu Orfea a Eurydiky.

Volná adaptace Monteverdeho originálu byla vytvořena Carlem Orffem; Spolu s nářkem Ariany a tancem křehkých spojil moderní skladatel svého Orfea pod názvem Lamenti do třídílného divadelního večera.

HERAUSGEGEBEN

CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI

* (getauft 15.) Mai 1567 in Cremona † 29. November 1643 in Venedig Den ersten Musikunterricht empfing Monteverdi in seiner Vaterstadt.

In seinem
